Πρόεδρος της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων: Δεν αποδεχόμαστε λύση
που θα προκύψει από παρθενογένεση ή που θα παρέχει στην Τουρκία
εγγυητικά ή επεμβατικά δικαιώματα
Είμαστε έτοιμοι για έναν έντιμο και δίκαιο συμβιβασμό. Όμως, δεν αποδεχόμαστε νόθες λύσεις και ένα κλείσιμο του Κυπριακού που δεν θα αποδίδει δικαιοσύνη, δεν θα τερματίζει την κατοχή, δεν θα αποκαθιστά την ενότητα του κράτους, του λαού και των θεσμών και δεν θα τερματίζει τον εποικισμό.


Αυτά τόνισε, μεταξύ άλλων, ο Πρόεδρος της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων κ. Μάριος Καρογιάν μιλώντας χθες στο Εθνικό Μνημόσυνο του Στέλιου Αγαθοκλέους του υπερασπιστή της δημοκρατίας που υπήρξε θύμα της εγκληματικής δράσης της ΕΟΚΑ Β’ κατά την προπραξικοπηματική περίοδο, στον Ιερό Ναό Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου, στο Πραστειό Αυδήμου.

Είμαστε έτοιμοι, είπε ο Πρόεδρος της Βουλής, για έναν ιστορικό συμβιβασμό, για μια λύση δικοινοτικής διζωνικής ομοσπονδίας. Απορρίπτουμε λύση συνομοσπονδίας ή δύο κρατών.

Αναφερόμενος στη συνέχεια στις αδιάλλακτες θέσεις τόσο της πολιτικής όσο και της στρατιωτικής ηγεσίας της Τουρκίας και του κατοχικού ηγέτη Mehmet Ali Talat ο Πρόεδρος της Βουλής τόνισε ότι ουσιαστικά θέλουν μια λύση στη βάση των όρων της Τουρκίας και των στρατηγικών της σχεδίων. Μια λύση που ούτε τα συμφέροντα των Τουρκοκυπρίων εξυπηρετεί. Τέτοια λύση, τόνισε, σίγουρα δεν πρέπει να αναμένεται ότι θα αποδεχθούμε. Ούτε εθελόδουλοι είμαστε, ούτε αυτόχειρες σκοπεύουμε να καταστούμε. Επαναδιακηρύσσουμε για μια ακόμη φορά ότι για μας τα εθνικά δίκαια είναι αναπαλλοτρίωτα και αδιαπραγμάτευτα.

Και πρόσθεσε: Παρακολουθούμε με ψυχραιμία τις εξελίξεις. Δεν έχουμε λόγους να είμαστε αισιόδοξοι. Ούτε, όμως, καταλήγουμε σε πλήρη απαισιοδοξία. Συνεχίζουμε με σταθερότητα και συνέπεια τις θέσεις μας, με πολιτική βούληση για την εξεύρεση λύσης και με καλή θέληση. Λέμε, την ίδια στιγμή, ότι για να υπάρξει πρόοδος πρέπει η βούληση για λύση και η καλή θέληση της δικής μας πλευράς να βρουν ανάλογη ανταπόκριση και από την τουρκική πλευρά.

Επαναλαμβάνουμε για μια ακόμη φορά τη στήριξη μας στη διακηρυγμένη και σταθερή θέση του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας ότι απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για την έναρξη απευθείας διαπραγματεύσεων είναι η ουσιαστική πρόοδος στις Ομάδες Εργασίας και τις Τεχνικές Επιτροπές.

Παράλληλα, απευθυνόμαστε στα Ηνωμένα Έθνη, την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, τις ΗΠΑ, τη Βρετανία και κάθε άλλο παράγοντα της διεθνούς κοινότητας που επιθυμεί να διαδραματίσει ρόλο για την επίλυση του κυπριακού προβλήματος, ή που έχει ευθύνη να εργαστεί για τη σωστή λύση του Κυπριακού, και τους υποδεικνύουμε για μια ακόμη φορά ότι το κλειδί της λύσης βρίσκεται στα χέρια της Άγκυρας. Εκεί ας στρέψουν την προσοχή και τις προσπάθειες τους. Εκεί ας απευθύνουν τις προτροπές, τις υποδείξεις και τις συμβουλές τους. Εκεί ας κατευθύνουν τις πιέσεις τους.

Αν ολιγωρήσουν ή αν δεν έχουν τη διάθεση να πιέσουν την Τουρκία, τα πράγματα θα οδηγηθούν σε ένα νέο αδιέξοδο. Και η ευθύνη θα βαραίνει την τουρκική πλευρά και όσους την θωπεύουν ή την ανέχονται.

Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών σε επίσημη επίσκεψη στην Κίνα – Δηλώσεις πριν την αναχώρηση
Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών κ. Μάρκος Κυπριανού αναχώρησε το Σάββατο, 28 Ιουνίου για το Πεκίνο όπου θα πραγματοποιήσει επίσημη επίσκεψη μεταξύ 29 Ιουνίου – 1 Ιουλίου.

Το Κυπριακό και οι διμερείς σχέσεις θα βρίσκονται στο επίκεντρο των συνομιλιών που θα έχει ο κ. Κυπριανού με τον ομόλογο του Υπουργό Εξωτερικών της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας της Κίνας κ. Yang Jiechi. Οι δύο Υπουργοί θα μελετήσουν επίσης τις προοπτικές ανάπτυξης της ήδη εξαίρετης συνεργασίας μεταξύ των δύο χωρών. Θα συζητήσουν ακόμη διεθνή θέματα αμοιβαίου ενδιαφέροντος καθώς και τις σχέσεις ΕΕ-Κίνας.

Στο πλαίσιο της επίσκεψης, ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών θα έχει επίσης χωριστές συναντήσεις με τον Κρατικό Σύμβουλο της Κυβέρνησης κ. Dai Bingguo και τον Υφυπουργό Διεθνών Σχέσεων του Κομμουνιστικού Κόμματος της Κίνας κ. Lin Jinjun.

Σε δηλώσεις του το Σάββατο βράδυ στο αεροδρόμιο Λάρνακας, πριν αναχωρήσει για την Κίνα, ανέφερε ότι το ξεκαθάρισμα της βάσης της λύσης του Κυπριακού θα πρέπει να βρίσκεται στην ημερήσια διάταξη της συνάντησης που θα έχουν την Τρίτη ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας και ο Τουρκοκύπριος ηγέτης Mehmet Ali Talat, προσθέτοντας ότι είναι σημαντικό να ξεκαθαρίσει το θέμα αυτό για να μπορέσει να υπάρξει στη συνέχεια πιο γρήγορη πρόοδος στις Ομάδες Εργασίας.

Τόνισε δε, ότι είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό οι όποιες εναλλακτικές λύσεις ή προτάσεις παρουσιάζονται στις Ομάδες Εργασίας να έχουν στόχο την ενότητα του ομόσπονδου κράτους και όχι να οδηγούν σε δύο διαφορετικά κράτη.

«Αυτές οι συναντήσεις έχουν τη σημασία τους γι’ αυτό και περιλήφθηκαν στη συμφωνία της 21ης Μαρτίου», είπε ο Υπουργός και πρόσθεσε πως «η πλευρά μας δεν είναι ευχαριστημένη από τη μέχρι σήμερα πρόοδο που έχει γίνει στις Ομάδες Εργασίας» και στη συνάντηση Χριστόφια-Talat «θα μπορέσει να γίνει μια συζήτηση και με την προσπάθεια να ενισχυθεί αυτή η διαδικασία».

Σημείωσε ότι «υπήρξαν κάποιες διαφωνίες από την άλλη πλευρά πάνω στο θέμα της βάσης της λύσης του Κυπριακού, εξ ου και η αντίδρασή τους προς το τελευταίο ψήφισμα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας» και πρόσθεσε πως «θα πρέπει και αυτό το θέμα να είναι στην ημερήσια διάταξη για να ξεκαθαρίσει. Είναι σημαντικό να μπορέσει να ξεκαθαρίσει το θέμα της βάσης λύσης για να μπορέσει να ακολουθήσει μετά και πιο γρήγορη πρόοδος στις Ομάδες Εργασίας».

Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών κλήθηκε να σχολιάσει και τις δηλώσεις του Επιτρόπου Προεδρίας Γιώργου Ιακώβου στο ΚΥΠΕ ότι τα πράγματα είναι καλύτερα στο θέμα της κυριαρχίας ενώ στο θέμα της ιθαγένειας, στο οποίο επιμένει η Τουρκία, υπάρχουν κάποιες διαφωνίες γιατί η τουρκική πλευρά επικαλείται το σχέδιο Annan.

«Υπάρχουν σημεία στα οποία έχει πράγματι επιτευχθεί κάποιο έργο, υπάρχουν άλλα σημεία που υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη απόσταση», είπε και πρόσθεσε πως «ξέραμε από την αρχή, αφού είχε δηλωθεί από την άλλη πλευρά, ότι θέλουν το σχέδιο Annan σαν βάση λύσης. Επομένως δεν μας εκπλήσσει αν φέρουνε, όπως και δικαιούνται άλλωστε, κάποια κομμάτια του σχεδίου ως δικές τους προτάσεις».

Αυτό, συνέχισε, «δεν σημαίνει βεβαίως ότι εμείς είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να τα δεχτούμε. Οι δικές μας αρχές είναι δεδομένες, έχουν επανειλημμένα λεχθεί και περιλαμβάνονται στα ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας και τις Συμφωνίες Υψηλού Επιπέδου» ανέφερε και σημείωσε πως «υπάρχει μια διαφωνία. Εκείνο που είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό είναι ότι όποιες εναλλακτικές λύσεις ή προτάσεις παρουσιάζονται στις Ομάδες Εργασίας να έχουν στόχο την ενότητα του ομόσπονδου κράτους με τις βασικές αρχές και όχι να οδηγούν σε δύο διαφορετικά κράτη. Και εδώ ακριβώς είναι που πρέπει να επικεντρωθούμε», τόνισε.

Σε ερώτηση εάν συμμερίζεται την άποψη ότι η Τουρκία εξακολουθεί να κρατά το κλειδί για λύση του Κυπριακού, ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών απάντησε πως η Τουρκία «χωρίς αμφιβολία σίγουρα κρατά ένα από τα κλειδιά. Μια χώρα που έχει κατοχικά στρατεύματα, κατέχει σχεδόν το μισό έδαφος της Κύπρου, έχει φέρει πάνω από 100 χιλιάδες εποίκους και που συντηρεί οικονομικά το ψευδοκράτος είναι λογικό ότι έχει μια βασική επιρροή» υπέδειξε.

Ανέφερε ακόμα ότι «η Τουρκία έχει επανειλημμένα πει ότι η ίδια έχει στρατηγικά και ζωτικά συμφέροντα στην Κύπρο και άρα το πώς θα εξελιχθεί η πορεία των διαπραγματεύσεων θα κριθεί από τη στάση της Τουρκίας. Αυτός είναι ένας από τους βασικούς, αν όχι ο πιο βασικός, παράγοντας της επίτευξης λύσης του κυπριακού προβλήματος» είπε.

Κληθείς να σχολιάσει την επιμονή της τ/κ πλευράς για λύση του Κυπριακού εντός του 2009, ο κ. Κυπριανού είπε πως «αυτό που εμείς λέμε είναι ότι είναι στο χέρι της άλλης πλευράς πότε θα λυθεί το Κυπριακό. Υπάρχουν οι Συμφωνίες Υψηλού Επιπέδου, υπάρχουν τα ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας , υπάρχει η συμφωνία της 8ης Ιουλίου» είπε και πρόσθεσε πως «εάν η άλλη πλευρά τηρήσει αυτά που έχουν συμφωνηθεί, τότε μπορεί να λυθεί αμέσως το Κυπριακό».

«Το βασικό πρόβλημα και η βασική καθυστέρηση είναι ότι η άλλη πλευρά δεν θέλει να τηρήσει τα συμφωνηθέντα, αντίθετα επαναφέρει καινούρια ζητήματα ή ζητήματα που έχουν απορριφθεί στο παρελθόν. Ολοι βιαζόμαστε να λυθεί το Κυπριακό αλλά η ταχύτητα εξαρτάται περισσότερο από την άλλη πλευρά», σημείωσε.

Σε ερώτηση κατά πόσον στις συναντήσεις που θα έχει στην Κίνα θα ζητήσει τη βοήθεια της χώρας αυτής για να πιέσει την Τουρκία προκειμένου να αλλάξει τη στάση της στο Κυπριακό, ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών απάντησε πως «αυτό είναι κάτι που συζητούμε με όλο το διεθνή παράγοντα διότι», όπως εξήγησε, «έχουμε δει ότι η Τουρκία όχι μόνο δεν δείχνει καλή θέληση από τον καιρό που άρχισαν οι συνομιλίες αλλά κάποιος μπορεί να πει ότι έχουμε δει μια σκλήρυνση της στάσης της Τουρκίας».
Πρόσθεσε επίσης ότι «αυτό είναι ένα θέμα για το οποίο αφού εμείς δεν έχουμε απευθείας επαφή και η Τουρκία δεν κάθεται στο τραπέζι των διαπραγματεύσεων, ζητούμε από όλους τους φίλους, το διεθνή παράγοντα να ενθαρρύνει την Τουρκία να έχει μια πιο θετική στάση. Από την άλλη πλευρά εκείνο που επίσης έχει σημασία για μας είναι τα πέντε μόνιμα μέλη του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας, τα οποία εμπλέκονται άμεσα στο Κυπριακό, να ενεργούν σαν ομάδα ακριβώς όπως γίνεται στην Κύπρο και θέλουμε να δούμε να συνεχίσει η ίδια προσέγγιση και στη Νέα Υόρκη».

Αναφερόμενος στην επίσκεψή του στην Κίνα, ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών είπε ότι βασικός στόχος του ταξιδιού είναι «η συνάντηση με την κινεζική Κυβέρνηση, τον Υπουργό Εξωτερικών, τον Αντιπρόεδρο της Κυβέρνησης που ασχολείται με θέματα εξωτερικής πολιτικής και τον Υφυπουργό Εξωτερικών του Κομουνιστικού κόμματος της Κίνας. Υπάρχει μια μεγάλη ημερήσια διάταξη», είπε ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών με κύριο θέμα το Κυπριακό και ειδικά οι τελευταίες εξελίξεις.

«Η Κίνα είναι μέλος του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ, είναι φίλη χώρα, μας έχει στηρίξει σε πολύ δύσκολες στιγμές και είναι σημαντικό πέρα από την πολύ καλή δουλειά που κάνουν οι πρέσβεις τόσο της Κίνας όσο και της Κύπρου να έχουμε ένα απευθείας διάλογο και μία αλληλοενημέρωση» είπε.

Είπε τέλος ότι θα συζητηθούν επίσης διμερή ζητήματα που αφορούν τις δύο χώρες, «περισσότερο την ανάπτυξη της συνεργασίας στον οικονομικό και εμπορικό τομέα, ζητήματα που αφορούν τις σχέσεις της Κίνας με την ΕΕ, ενώ θα συζητηθεί και το θέμα της συνάντησης της ΕΕ με τις χώρες της Ασίας που θα γίνει το φθινόπωρο στην Κίνα». Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών επιστρέφει στην Κύπρο στις 2 Iουλίου.

Συνάντηση Ιακώβου – Ναμί
Συνάντηση θα έχουν στις 4 το απόγευμα ο Επίτροπος Προεδρίας Γιώργος Ιακώβου και ο σύμβουλος του Τ/κ ηγέτη Mehmet Ali Talat, Ozdil Nami στο Λήδρα Πάλας.
Στη συνάντηση θα συμμετέχει και ο Ειδικός Αντιπρόσωπος του ΓΓ του ΟΗΕ στην Κύπρο Taye Brook Zerihoun.

Η συνάντηση πραγματοποιείται μια ημέρα πριν από τη συνάντηση που θα έχουν ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας και ο Τ/κ ηγέτης Mehmet Ali Talat.

Aπόψε καταπλέει το πρώτο τάνκερ με 50.000 τόνους νερού
Φθάνει σήμερα στο λιμάνι Λεμεσού το πρώτο δεξαμενόπλοιο με 50.000 κυβικά μέτρα νερού. Το δεξαμενόπλοιο απέπλευσε από την Ελευσίνα το απόγευμα του Σαββάτου και αναμένεται να φθάσει σήμερα γύρω στις 9μ.μ. με καθυστέρηση τεσσάρων ωρών λόγω θαλασσοταραχής.

Μετά τον κατάπλου θα γίνει εξέταση από το κρατικό χημείο του νερού και αφού ολοκληρωθούν όλοι οι έλεγχοι της ποιότητας στη συνέχεια θα διοχετευθεί στις δεξαμενές του Συμβουλίου Υδατοπρομήθειας Λεμεσού.

Η Κυβέρνηση έχει αγοράσει από την Ελλάδα συνολικά οκτώ εκ. κ.μ. νερού στην προσπάθειά της να απαμβλύνει το πρόβλημα της λειψυδρίας. Η μεταφορά του νερού από την Ελλάδα θα κρατήσει έξι μήνες.

Κατά τον ελλιμενισμό του δεξαμενόπλοιου θα γίνει μικρή τελετή υποδοχής στην οποία θα παραστεί ο Υπουργός Γεωργίας, Φυσικών Πόρων και Περιβάλλοντος κ. Πολυνείκης, ενώ ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Χρυσόστομος Β΄ θα τελέσει αγιασμό.

O πλοιοκτήτης και διευθυντής της εταιρείας Μιχάλης Ιωαννίδης, δήλωσε στο ΡΙΚ ότι καθημερινά θα καταπλέει στην Κύπρο ένα δεξαμενόπλοιο, το οποίο θα μεταφέρει γύρω στις 50 χιλιάδες κυβικά μέτρα νερού.

Αποτελέσματα Εισαγωγικών εξετάσεων
Ανακοινώνονται σήμερα τα αποτέλεσματα των Παγκυπρίων Εξετάσεων για τα Ανώτερα και Ανώτατα Εκπαιδευτικά Ιδρύματα της Κύπρου, καθώς και για τις Στρατιωτικές και Δραματικές Σχολές της Ελλάδας.
Τα αποτελέσματα θα ανακοινώσει ο Υπουργός Παιδείας Ανδρέας Δημητρίου, στις 10.00 π.μ. σε δημοσιογραφική διάσκεψη.

Επαφές του Υπουργού Εξωτερικών στην Κίνα
Στο πλαίσιο της επίσημης επίσκεψής του στην Κίνα, ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών κ. Μάρκος Κυπριανού είχε (30.6.08) συνάντηση με τον Κρατικό Σύμβουλο της χώρας, Αρμόδιο για Εξωτερικές Υποθέσεις κ. Dai Bingguo.

Κατά τη συνάντηση, που διεξήχθη σε ιδιαίτερα φιλική ατμόσφαιρα, ο κ. Dai επαναβεβαίωσε για την πάγια θέση αρχών της Κίνας στο Κυπριακό, η οποία συνεχίζει σταθερή και αναλλοίωτη με την Κίνα να υποστηρίζει την εδαφική ακεραιότητα, κυριαρχία και ανεξαρτησία της Κύπρου. Αναφορικά με τις τρέχουσες εξελίξεις στη διαδικασία επίλυσης του Κυπριακού τόνισε ότι η Κίνα εκτιμά τις προσπάθειες της Κυπριακής Κυβέρνησης και ότι, ως Μόνιμο Μέλος του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ, θα συνεχίσει να διαδραματίζει θετικό και εποικοδομητικό ρόλο στην επίλυση του θέματος, η οποία θα είναι δίκαιη και λειτουργική και θα βασίζεται στα ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ.

Ο ανώτατος Κινέζος αξιωματούχος για θέματα εξωτερικής πολιτικής ευχαρίστησε την Κύπρο για την προσήλωσή της στην πολιτική της Μίας Κίνας, για την άμεση έκφραση συμπαράστασης για τους καταστροφικούς σεισμούς της 12ης Μαΐου στην επαρχία Σιτσουάν και την οικονομική της βοήθεια καθώς και για τη διακηρυγμένη αντίθεση της στην πολιτικοποίηση των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων. Ιδιαίτερη μνεία έκανε στις προσπάθειες που καταβάλλει η Κύπρος για ενίσχυση των σχέσεων ΕΕ-Κίνας.

Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών εξέφρασε, για μια ακόμα φορά, τα συλλυπητήρια του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας, της Κυβέρνησης και του κυπριακού λαού για τα δεινά που οι σεισμοί έχουν επισωρεύσει καθώς και συγχαρητήρια για την εξαίρετη διαχείριση της κρίσης από την κινεζική ηγεσία. Ο κ. Κυπριανού εξέφρασε επίσης την ευγνωμοσύνη της Κύπρου για την ειλικρινή θέση αρχών της Κίνας στο Κυπριακό και επανέλαβε την αντίθεσή μας στην επιχειρούμενη προσπάθεια πολιτικοποίησης των ολυμπιακών Αγώνων. Τόνισε ότι στην τελετή έναρξης η Κύπρος θα εκπροσωπηθεί στο ανώτατο επίπεδο, από τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας, και ευχήθηκε κάθε επιτυχία στη διεξαγωγή των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων.

Κατά τη συνάντηση διαπιστώθηκε το εξαιρετικό επίπεδο των διμερών σχέσεων και συμφωνήθηκε όπως οι δύο πλευρές εντείνουν τις προσπάθειές τους για περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη των διμερών σχέσεων σε όλους τους τομείς, περιλαμβανομένου του οικονομικού-εμπορικού και τουριστικού, αυξήσουν τη συχνότητα ανταλλαγών επισκέψεων σε όλα τα επίπεδα και εργαστούν από κοινού για περαιτέρω σύσφιξη των σινοευρωπαϊκών σχέσεων, διαδικασία επωφελή και για τις δύο πλευρές.

Ο κ. Υπουργός θα έχει σήμερα συναντήσεις με τον Υπουργό Εξωτερικών της Κίνας κ. Yang Jiechi και τον Υφυπουργό Εξωτερικών του Τμήματος Διεθνών Σχέσεων της Κεντρικής Επιτροπής του Κομμουνιστικού Κόμματος κ. Li Jinjun, ο οποίος είχε επισκεφθεί την Κύπρο τον περασμένο Μάρτιο.

Εκδήλωση αναγνώρισης της φινλανδικής συνεισφοράς στο Κυπριακό από τη Μόνιμη Αντιπροσωπεία της Κύπρου στο Στρασβούργο
Ο Μόνιμος Αντιπρόσωπος της Δημοκρατίας στο Στρασβούργο Πρέσβης κ. Μ. Σταυρινός παρέθεσε την περασμένη βδομάδα δείπνο προς τιμήν της Φινλανδικής και της Κυπριακής Αντιπροσωπείας στην Κοινοβουλευτική Συνέλευση του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης (ΚΣΣΕ).

Ο κ. Σταυρινός, προσφωνώντας τους προσκεκλημένους, εκθείασε την αποστολή του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης και της ΚΣΣΕ όσον αφορά στην προστασία των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, γενικότερα, αλλά και ειδικότερα όσον αφορά στην προστασία των δικαιωμάτων αυτών στη μοιρασμένη διά της ένοπλης βίας μικρή Κύπρο.

Επίσης, εξέφρασε ευγνωμοσύνη προς την κοινοβουλευτική αντιπροσωπεία και τη Μόνιμη Αντιπροσωπεία της Φινλανδίας για την τήρηση θέσεων αρχών στο Κυπριακό, καθώς και τις ευχαριστίες του για τη μακρόχρονη συμμετοχή που είχαν οι Φινλανδοί ειρηνευτές στην UNFICYP. Ο Κύπριος διπλωμάτης έκανε ειδική μνεία στο ρόλο και την προσφορά δύο επιφανών Φινλανδών, των κ.κ. Sakari Tuomioja και Ilmari Martola, οι οποίοι διετέλεσαν στο παρελθόν, αντίστοιχα, πρώτος Ειδικός Αντιπρόσωπος του Γενικού Γραμματέα του ΟΗΕ για το Κυπριακό και Διοικητής της UNFICYP, σε δύσκολες περιόδους για το νησί.

Τέλος, ο κ. Σταυρινός, αναφερόμενος στην πρόσφατη ενθαρρυντική κινητικότητα στο Κυπριακό, εξέφρασε την ελπίδα ότι, με τη συνέχιση της υποστήριξης, στη βάση αρχών, της διεθνούς κοινότητας, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της Φινλανδίας, θα εκπληρωθεί το όνειρο όλων των Κυπρίων να δουν την πατρίδα τους επανενωμένη, χωρίς ξένους στρατούς και παραβιάσεις ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων.

Στην αντιφώνησή της η επικεφαλής της Φινλανδικής Αντιπροσωπείας κα Hurskainen εξέφρασε την ελπίδα για επανένωση της Κύπρου υπό την αιγίδα του ΟΗΕ και με τη συνδρομή του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης στους τομείς αρμοδιότητάς του.

Ομήρου– Σοσιαλιστική Διεθνής – Δηλώσεις
Την ικανοποίησή του εξέφρασε (30/6/08) ο Πρόεδρος του ΚΣ ΕΔΕΚ Γιαννάκης Ομήρου, μιλώντας (30/6/08) στο ΚΥΠΕ, για την ομόφωνη απόφαση του Συνεδρίου της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς, η οποία είναι σαφής ότι δεν έγινε δεκτή η εισήγηση της επιτροπής δεοντολογίας για αναβάθμιση, σε πλήρες μέλος, του Ρεπουμπλικανικού Τουρκικού Κόμματος (CTP).

Επίσης, ο κ. Ομήρου είπε ότι ανατέθηκε από το Συνέδριο στον Πρόεδρο της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς, Γιώργο Παπανδρέου και στο Γενικό Γραμματέα Λουϊς Αγιάλα, να έρθουν σε επαφή με το τουρκοκυπριακό κόμμα CTP για να διαπιστώσουν κατά πόσο αναγνωρίζει την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία – μια νόμιμη Κυβέρνηση – καθώς και τα σχετικά ψηφίσματα του ΟΗΕ και της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς.

«Αν αυτό καταστεί σαφές, η Σοσιαλιστική Διεθνής θα επανέλθει», είπε ο κ. Ομήρου και πρόσθεσε ότι αν δεν γίνουν δεκτοί αυτοί οι όροι κινδυνεύουν να χάσουν το καθεστώς του επισκέπτη.

Ο κ. Ομήρου ξεκαθάρισε παράλληλα ότι η ΕΔΕΚ δεν είναι εναντίον στη συμμετοχή τ/κ κόμματος στη Σοσιαλιστική Διεθνή.

Ο Πρόεδρος της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς Γιώργος Παπανδρέου επανέλαβε πως η Σοσιαλιστική Διεθνής αναγνωρίζει την Κυβέρνηση της Κύπρου ως τη μόνη νόμιμη διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένη κυβέρνηση, υποστηρίζει τις αποφάσεις του ΣΑ του ΟΗΕ και της ΕΕ, που θα οδηγήσουν σε λύση του Κυπριακού.

Επεσήμανε ωστόσο πως πεποίθηση της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς είναι ότι μπορεί να διαδραματίσει αποφασιστικό ρόλο με την κοινωνία των πολιτών και εξέφρασε την ελπίδα το τείχος που κρατά τόσα χρόνια το νησί διαιρεμένο να πέσει.

Από το βήμα του 23ου Συνεδρίου της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς, ο Πρόεδρος της Γιώργος Παπανδρέου επανέλαβε την ανάγκη κατανόησης που θα επιτρέψει σε Ελληνοκύπριους και Τουρκοκύπριους να επανενωθούν σε ένα ομόσπονδο κράτος, σύμφωνα με τις αποφάσεις του ΟΗΕ, τερματίζοντας την 35χρονη κατοχή του νησιού

Ο κ. Παπανδρέου, στην εναρκτήρια ομιλία του, υπογράμμισε την ανάγκη να σταλεί το μήνυμα ελπίδας και υποστήριξης της Σοσιαλιστικής Διεθνούς στον Πρόεδρο της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας Δημήτρη Χριστόφια και τον Τουρκοκύπριο ηγέτη Mehmet Ali Talat, που συναντώνται αύριο.

«Ας ελπίσουμε λοιπόν ότι το τείχος, που ήταν η διαίρεση της νήσου για τόσα πολλά χρόνια, σύντομα θα κατεδαφιστεί», είπε ο κ. Παπανδρέου.

The two Leaders met today in a positive and cooperative atmosphere.

They undertook a first review of the work of the Working Groups and Technical Committees.

They discussed the issues of single sovereignty and citizenship which they agreed in principle. They agreed to discuss the details of their implementation during the full-fledged negotiations.

They agreed to meet on 25 July when they will undertake the final review of the Working Groups and Technical Committees.

Δηλώσεις του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας – 1.7.08
Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας κ. Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας κληθείς από δημοσιογράφους να δώσει την εκτίμησή του για τη συνάντησή του με τον Τουρκοκύπριο ηγέτη κ. Mehmet Ali Talat είπε ότι “είμαι ικανοποιημένος” από τη συνάντηση.

Είπε επίσης ότι αύριο (σ.σ. σήμερα) θα ενημερώσει τα μέλη του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου και πρόσθεσε ότι την ερχόμενη Παρασκευή κατά τη συνέντευξη Τύπου που θα δώσει θα προβεί σε εκτενή ενημέρωση.

Συνάντηση του Υπουργού Οικονομικών με αντιπροσωπεία του Συνεργατικού Κινήματος – 1.7.08
Ο Υπουργός Οικονομικών κ. Χαρίλαος Σταυράκης είχε χθες συνάντηση με αντιπροσωπεία της Συνεργατικού Κινήματος, αντικείμενο της οποίας ήταν η πορεία της οικονομίας.

Στην σύσκεψη συμμετείχαν ο Γενικός Διευθυντής του Υπουργείου Οικονομικών κ. Χρίστος Πατσαλίδης και Ανώτεροι Λειτουργοί του Υπουργείου. Από πλευράς του Συνεργατικού Κινήματος συμμετείχαν, μεταξύ άλλων, ο Έφορος Υπηρεσίας, Εποπτείας και Ανάπτυξης Συνεργατικών Εταιρειών κ. Κωνσταντίνος Λύρας και Μέλη του Συμβουλίου της Συνεργατικής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας με επικεφαλής τον Πρόεδρο κ. Δημήτρη Σταύρου και το Γενικό Διευθυντή κ. Ερωτόκριτο Χλωρακιώτη.

Μετά το πέρας της συνάντησης, ο Υπουργός ανέφερε τα ακόλουθα προς τους δημοσιογράφους: «Όλοι οι Κύπριοι αναγνωρίζουν την τεράστια οικονομική και κοινωνική συμβολή του Συνεργατικού Κινήματος για το μέσο Κύπριο πολίτη και νομίζω είναι αυτονόητο ότι αυτή η Κυβέρνηση θα κάνει ό,τι είναι δυνατό για να στηρίξει το Συνεργατισμό και να διατηρήσει το επίπεδο ευρωστίας το οποίο σήμερα έχει. Με τους φίλους ηγέτες του Συνεργατικού Κινήματος έχουμε αναλύσει όλα τα χρηματοοικονομικά τελευταία γεγονότα που συμβαίνουν στην Κύπρο. Νομίζω υπάρχει απόλυτη δέσμευση από αυτή την Κυβέρνηση να στηρίξουμε το Συνεργατικό Κίνημα. Έχουμε ανταλλάξει κάποιες πρακτικές σκέψεις για υλοποίηση αυτής της δέσμευσης και είμαι αισιόδοξος ότι ο Συνεργατισμός θα συνεχίσει με τον ίδιο δυναμικό τρόπο να προσφέρει στην Κύπρο».

Ερωτηθείς σχετικά, ο Υπουργός ανέφερε: «Δεν θα ήθελα να αποκαλύψω τα μέτρα τα οποία έχουμε συζητήσει. Αντιλαμβάνεστε ότι θα πρέπει να είμαστε προσεκτικοί και η στήριξη προς το Συνεργατισμό να συνάδει και με την κυπριακή αλλά και την ευρωπαϊκή νομοθεσία, αλλά σίγουρα υπάρχει και πολιτική και οικονομική βούληση».

Κληθείς να σχολιάσει τα νέα δεδομένα που προκαλεί ο ευρωπαϊκός πληθωρισμός, ο κ. Σταυράκης απάντησε: «Νομίζω είναι ξεκάθαρο ότι ο πληθωρισμός είναι διεθνές και ευρωπαϊκό φαινόμενο. Εμείς το είχαμε πει από την αρχή ότι δεν είναι καθαρά κυπριακό φαινόμενο, οφείλεται σε εξωγενείς παράγοντες, στις αυξήσεις των τιμών της ενέργειας, των δημητριακών και των πρώτων υλών. Τώρα κτυπά και την Ευρώπη σχεδόν με τους ίδιους ρυθμούς. Πρόσφατα, οι Υπουργοί Οικονομικών της Γαλλίας, της Γερμανίας και της Ισπανίας έχουν κάνει έκκληση ούτως ώστε τα επιτόκια να μείνουν όσο πιο χαμηλά γίνεται και σίγουρα αυτό θα βοηθήσει πολύ και την Κύπρο διότι η αύξηση δανειστικών επιτοκίων προσθέτει ακόμη ένα βάρος στο καλάθι της νοικοκυράς».

Τέλος, σε παρατήρηση δημοσιογράφου ότι το να ακολουθήσουν οι τραπεζικοί οργανισμοί τα επιτόκια των συνεργατικών θα ήταν μια σωστή λύση, ο Υπουργός είπε: «Νομίζω αυτή ακριβώς ήταν η ανησυχία των ηγετών του Συνεργατικού Κινήματος, πώς να διατηρηθούν τα δανειστικά επιτόκια στην Κύπρο όσο πιο χαμηλά γίνεται για να μην επιβαρυνθεί το κυπριακό νοικοκυριό».

Από πλευράς του ο Έφορος Υπηρεσίας, Εποπτείας και Ανάπτυξης Συνεργατικών Εταιρειών κ. Λύρας, ανέφερε: «Σήμερα είχαμε μια πολύ χρήσιμη συνάντηση με τον Υπουργό Οικονομικών στον οποίο εξηγήσαμε ότι ο Συνεργατισμός είναι ένας θεσμός με 100 χρόνια ζωής στην Κύπρο και, μέσα σ’ αυτό το πλαίσιο, εκφράσαμε την πρόθεση του Συνεργατισμού να συνεχίσει δυνατός, και διαθέτει τους μηχανισμούς ώστε να προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες του στον κυπριακό λαό. Εκφράσαμε στον Υπουργό τις ανησυχίες μας για κάποιες κοινωνικές επιπτώσεις της κατάστασης που επικρατεί τώρα στο χρηματοπιστωτικό τομέα. Ο Συνεργατισμός είναι σε θέση να αντιμετωπίσει κάποιες φυσιολογικές δυσκολίες που υπάρχουν αλλά, μέσα σε ένα υγιές ανταγωνιστικό περιβάλλον, πάντα έχοντας ως γνώμονα το συμφέρον των μελών του και του κυπριακού λαού, θα ενεργήσει με σύνεση και κατανόηση προς τις ανάγκες τους».

Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας προήδρευσε συνεδρίας του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου
Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας κ. Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας προήδρευσε χθες συνεδρίας του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου.

Μετά το πέρας της συνεδρίας του Σώματος, ο Κυβερνητικός Εκπρόσωπος κ. Στέφανος Στεφάνου προέβη στην ακόλουθη δήλωση:

«Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας ενδελεχώς ενημέρωσε σήμερα τα μέλη του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου αναφορικά με τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις στο Κυπριακό. Η συνεδρία του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου θα συνεχιστεί την ερχόμενη Παρασκευή στις 4.30μ.μ., κατά την οποία τα μέλη του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου θα εκφράσουν τις απόψεις και τις εκτιμήσεις τους επί των εξελίξεων».

Στη συνεδρία του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου πήραν μέρος ο κ. Τάσσος Παπαδόπουλος, τέως Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας, ο κ. Γιώργος Βασιλείου, πρώην Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας, οι κ.κ. Νίκος Κατσουρίδης και Άντρος Κυπριανού εκ μέρους του ΑΚΕΛ, οι κ.κ. Νίκος Αναστασιάδης και Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου εκ μέρους του ΔΗ.ΣΥ, οι κ.κ. Μάριος Καρογιάν και Νίκος Πιττοκοπίτης εκ μέρους του ΔΗΚΟ, οι κ.κ. Μαρίνος Σιζόπουλος και Κυριάκος Μαυρονικόλας εκ μέρους του Κ.Σ. ΕΔΕΚ, οι κ.κ. Δημήτρης Συλλούρης και Νίκος Κουτσού εκ μέρους του Ευρωπαϊκού Κόμματος και οι κ.κ. Γιώργος Περδίκης και Ντίνος Πασπαλλίδης εκ μέρους του Κινήματος Οικολόγων-Περιβαλλοντιστών.

Στη συνεδρία μετείχαν, επίσης, ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών κ. Μάρκος Κυπριανού, ο Επίτροπος Προεδρίας κ. Γιώργος Ιακώβου, ο Κυβερνητικός Εκπρόσωπος κ. Στέφανος Στεφάνου και ο Υφυπουργός παρά τω Προέδρω κ. Τίτος Χριστοφίδης.

Συνέντευξη Τύπου του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας
Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας κ. Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας θα δώσει την Τρίτη 8 Ιουλίου και – όχι την Παρασκευή 4 Ιουλίου – 2008 και ώρα 11.00 π.μ., στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο, συνέντευξη Τύπου στην οποία θα γίνει απολογισμός των πρώτων 120 ημερών της διακυβέρνησής του.

Η συνέντευξη Τύπου θα διαρκέσει δύο ώρες και θα αποτελείται από δύο ενότητες. Η πρώτη θα αφορά το Κυπριακό και η δεύτερη την εσωτερική διακυβέρνηση.

Τη συνέντευξη μπορούν να παρακολουθήσουν Ελληνοκύπριοι, Τουρκοκύπριοι και ξένοι δημοσιογράφοι. Θα υπάρχει ταυτόχρονη μετάφραση στα τουρκικά και στα αγγλικά.

Bουλή – Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας
’Αρχισε σήμερα γύρω στις 11 το πρωί η συζήτηση στη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων για τη Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας. Η συζήτηση, η οποία αναμένεται να διαρκέσει πέραν των πέντε ωρών, αρχίζει με ομιλίες εκπροσώπων των κοινοβουλευτικών κομμάτων.

Νωρίτερα η Βουλή θα συνέλθει για να ψηφίσει νομοσχέδια που έχουν ήδη κατατεθεί.

Αμέσως μετά θα ξεκινήσει η συζήτηση για τη Μεταρρυθμιστική Συνθήκη της ΕΕ με ομιλητές από όλα τα κοινοβουλευτικά κόμματα. Οπως δήλωσε (2.7.08) στο ΚΥΠΕ ο Αναπληρωτής Γενικός Διευθυντής της Βουλής, Σωκράτης Σωκράτους ο χρόνος που έχει κατανεμηθεί είναι ανάλογα με τη δύναμη των κομμάτων. Ως εκ τούτου, αντιστοιχεί χρόνος 90 λεπτών στο ΑΚΕΛ και το ΔΗΣΥ, 60 λεπτά στο ΔΗΚΟ, 40 στην ΕΔΕΚ, 35 στο ΕΥΡΩΚΟ και 20 λεπτά στο Κίνημα Οικολόγων Περιβαλλοντιστών.

Ολα τα κόμματα, πλην των Οικολόγων, θα εκπροσωπηθούν από περισσότερους από δύο ομιλητές. Ο κ. Σωκράτους εξήγησε ότι αναμένουν από τα κόμματα να δώσουν κατάλογο των ομιλητών στη Βουλή. Οι κύριοι ομιλητές που θα είναι αρχηγοί ή οι κοινοβουλευτικοί εκπρόσωποι θα μιλήσουν στο απογευματινό μέρος της συνεδρίας που θα αρχίσει γύρω στις 4.

Η ψήφιση του νομοσχεδίου που αφορά τη Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας αναμένεται λίγο μετά τις 7.30 το βράδυ.

Το ΑΚΕΛ έχει αποφασίσει να καταψηφίσει τη Συνθήκη, ΔΗΣΥ, ΔΗΚΟ, ΕΔΕΚ και ΕΥΡΩΚΟ έχουν ταχθεί υπέρ ενώ οι Οικολόγοι θα τηρήσουν αποχή. (ΚΥΠΕ 3.7.08).
Υπουργός Οικονομικών – Οικονομία
Η Κύπρος συνεχίζει να είναι μια υγιής, ευέλικτη και εύρωστη οικονομία της αγοράς στην οποία οι διεθνείς επιχειρήσεις μπορούν να εγκατασταθούν κάνοντας δραστηριότητες στην περιοχή και στον κόσμο ολόκληρο.

Αυτό ανέφερε ο Υπουργός Οικονομικών Χαρίλαος Σταυράκης σε ομιλία του στην ετήσια γενική συνέλευση του Συνδέσμου Διεθνών Επιχειρήσεων Κύπρου.

Ο Υπουργός ανέφερε ότι τα τελευταία τριάντα χρόνια η Κύπρος πέτυχε να μετατραπεί ένα καλής φήμης διεθνές επιχειρηματικό κέντρο.

“Αυτή η επιτυχία έγινε δυνατή γιατί εσείς επιλέξατε την Κύπρο για τις δραστηριότητές σας και εκμεταλλευτήκατε σωστά τα συγκριτικά της πλεονεκτήματα», είπε ο κ. Σταυράκης..

Αναφερόμενος στην υιοθέτηση του ευρώ είπε ότι αναμένεται να ενδυναμώσει την οικονομική ανάπτυξη και τις ξένες επενδύσεις.

Η Κύπρος παραμένει μια υγιής, εύρωστη και ευέλικτη οικονομία αγοράς στην οποία η διεθνής επιχειρηματικότητα μπορεί να επεκταθεί και να διεξάγει επιχειρήσεις αποτελεσματικά στην περιοχή και στον κόσμο, απολαμβάνοντας τα συγκριτικά πλεονεκτήματα που προσφέρει το νησί ως περιφερειακό και διεθνές κέντρο επιχειρήσεων, είπε.

Αναφερόμενος στα οικονομικά δεδομένα για το 2007 είπε ότι η Κύπρος πέτυχε ένα υψηλό ποσοστό ανάπτυξης και ισχυρή απόδοση στην απασχόληση.

Την ίδια ώρα, υπήρξε αποφασιστική βελτίωση των δημόσιων οικονομικών και ενδυνάμωση των συνθηκών μακροοικονομικής σταθερότητας της κυπριακής οικονομίας.

Ο Υπουργός πρόσθεσε ότι το υψηλό ποσοστό οικονομικής ανάπτυξης υπό συνθήκες μακροοικονομικής σταθερότητας διευκόλυνε την πραγματική σύγκλιση με την οικονομία της ΕΕ.

Αναφερόμενος στις προοπτικές για το 2008, είπε ότι φαίνεται πως θα είναι γενικώς θετικές παρά το αρνητικό εξωτερικό περιβάλλον και τα αυξημένα ρίσκα.

Η Κύπρος επικύρωσε τη Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας
Η Κύπρος είναι από χθες το 20 κράτος – μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης που επικυρώνει τη Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας. Σε χθεσινή συνεδρία της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων η ολομέλεια του Σώματος με 31 ψήφους υπέρ, 18 κατά και μια αποχή επικύρωσε τη Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας.

Υπέρ της Συνθήκης ψήφισαν οι παρόντες Βουλευτές των κομμάτων ΔΗΣΥ, ΔΗΚΟ, ΚΣ ΕΔΕΚ και Ευρωπαϊκού Κόμματος, κατά οι παρόντες βουλευτές του ΑΚΕΛ ενώ ο βουλευτής των Οικολόγων Γιώργος Περδίκης τήρησε αποχή.

Η Κύπρος είναι η πρώτη χώρα της ΕΕ που επικυρώνει τη Συνθήκη μετά το όχι των Ιρλανδών. Την επικύρωση της Συνθήκης από το Κυπριακό Κοινοβούλιο χαιρέτισαν με δηλώσεις τους ο Πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής Εμμανουέλ Μπαρόζο και ο Πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου κ. Χανς Γκετ Πέτερινγκ.

Ο Πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου, Hans-Gert Pöttering, εξέφρασε σήμερα την ικανοποίησή του για την κύρωση της συνθήκης της Λισαβόνας από την Κυπριακή Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων.

“Η έγκριση από τη μεγάλη πλειοψηφία των Μελών της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων της Κύπρου αμέσως μετά το ιρλανδικό δημοψήφισμα, είναι ένα πολύ θετικό μήνυμα ότι η Συνθήκη της Λισαβόνας αποτελεί ζωτικό συμφέρον της Ευρώπης.”
“Είκοσι κράτη μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης έχουν πλέον κυρώσει τη Συνθήκη. Η κύρωση πρέπει να συνεχιστεί και όλα τα κράτη μέλη πρέπει να εξακολουθήσουν να εκφράζουν τις θέσεις τους ως προς τη Συνθήκη έως το τέλος του τρέχοντος έτους. Στόχος είναι η Συνθήκη να έχει τεθεί σε εφαρμογή εγκαίρως σε σχέση με τις εκλογές του Ιουνίου 2009 για την ανάδειξη του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου”.

Lisbon Treaty: Joseph Daul congratulates the Cypriot Parliament for the ratification of the Treaty
Cyprus has become the 20th EU Member State to ratify the Lisbon Treaty in a session in the Cypriot Parliament on Thursday evening. The agreement was supported by a broad parliamentary majority and was only rejected by the governing communist party AKEL.

“I warmly congratulate the Cypriot Parliament on its historic decision reflecting the firm commitment of the people of Cyprus to the further integration of the EU” said Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group (Centre-Right), expressing his satisfaction on the outcome of the vote.

“The Lisbon Treaty brings Europe closer to the citizens, because it strengthens the European Parliament, the competences of the national parliaments, citizens’ fundamental rights and their direct democratic participation”, he continued.

“I would personally like to salute Democratic Rally and its president Nicos Anastasiades for the leading, decisive and politically responsible role they played in the ratification process. At the same time I regret the fact that the governing party AKEL rejected the Treaty despite its leader’s commitment – Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias – to support the Treaty”, stressed Joseph Daul.
“Finally, I would like to underline the need to continue the ratification process of the Treaty in the remaining Member States who have not yet done so. The Lisbon Treaty offers the necessary instruments to meet the European Union’s increasing challenges and can thus make Europe stronger”, concluded Joseph Daul.

Συνέρχεται σήμερα το Εθνικό Συμβούλιο
Συνεχίζεται σήμερα στις 4.30 μ.μ. η συνεδρία του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου, κατά την οποία τα μέλη του Σώματος θα εκφράσουν τις απόψεις και τις εκτιμήσεις τους για τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις του κυπριακού προβλήματος, όπως αυτές διαμορφώνονται μετά τη συνάντηση του Προέδρου Χριστόφια με τον Τουρκοκύπριο ηγέτη κ. Μεχμέτ Αλί Ταλάτ στις 1 Ιουλίου.

Κατά την προηγούμενη συνεδρία της περασμένης Τετάρτης ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας ενημέρωσε ενδελεχώς τα μέλη του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου αναφορικά με τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις στο Κυπριακό.

Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας κ. Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας, λόγω της συνέχισης της συνεδρίας του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου, αποφάσισε όπως μεταθέσει τη συνέντευξη Τύπου, η οποία ήταν προγραμματισμένη για σήμερα Παρασκευή 4 Ιουλίου, για την ερχόμενη Τρίτη 8 Ιουλίου 2008 και ώρα 11 π.μ.

Kοινή συνέντευξη Τύπου παρεχώρησαν χθες το πρωί ο Ελληνάς Πρόεδρος Κάρολος Παπούλιας και ο αυστριακός ομόλογος του Heinz Fischer, μετά από συνάντηση που είχαν σήμερα, την πρώτη μέρα της τριήμερης επίσημης επίσκεψης του κ. Παπούλια στην αυστριακή πρωτεύουσα.

Oπως ανέφεραν Fischer και Παπούλιας στη συνάντηση τους συζητήθηκαν οι διμερής σχέσεις, οι εξελίξεις για την Συνθήκη της Λισσαβόνας μετά από το Όχι των Ιρλανδών, η εσωτερική κρίση στην Τουρκία, το Κυπριακό, η προοπτική ένταξης των Δυτικών Βαλκανίων στην ΕΕ, το θέμα του καθεστώτος του Κοσσυφοπεδίου, καθώς και οι αρνητικές εξελίξεις στην παγκόσμια οικονομία.

Όσον αφορά το Κυπριακό ο Πρόεδρος Παπούλιας δήλωσε στον εισαγωγικό του χαιρετισμό, πως τόνισε στον ομόλογο του ότι είναι παράδοξο μια χώρα που φιλοδοξεί να γίνει μέλος της ΕΕ, να διατηρεί υπό κατοχή το 40% των εδαφών ενός κράτους μέλους της Ένωσης.

Ο Πρόεδρος Fischer ερωτηθείς από Ελληνίδα δημοσιογράφο κατά πόσον οι τρέχουσες εξελίξεις στην Τουρκία απομακρύνουν την Τουρκία από το στόχο της ένταξης της στην ΕΕ, τόνισε ότι είναι πεπεισμένος ότι η Τουρκία καταβάλει κάθε προσπάθεια για να πετύχει αυτό το στόχο και δεν θα φισθεί κόπων για να πετύχει τον στόχο αυτό. Όσον αφορά το αποτέλεσμα των διαπραγματεύσεων επανέλαβε την πάγια θέση της Αυστρίας ότι δεν μπορούν να γίνουν προγνώσεις, ούτε φυσικά να δοθούν διαβεβαιώσεις, σχετικά με την κατάληξη των διαπραγματεύσεων.
Σε ερώτηση που απηύθυνε αυστριακή δημοσιογράφος προς τον Πρόεδρο Παπούλια, σχετικά με τη θέση της Ελλάδας στο θέμα του καθεστώτος του Κοσσυφοπεδίου, ο Πρόεδρος Παπούλιας τόνισε ότι όσον αφορά στο Κοσσυφοπέδιο η Ελλάδα παρακολουθεί τις εξελίξεις με μεγάλη προσοχή. Η Ελλάδα ανήκει στην ομάδα κρατών που δεν αναγνώρισαν το Κοσσυφοπέδιο, γιατί εκτιμά ότι πρέπει να γίνουν μικρά και προσεκτικά βήματα προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση.

…..”Οι αρχές και τα ψηφίσματα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών αποτελούν τη βάση για την επίλυση του Κυπριακού προβλήματος. Το Κυπριακό είναι ένα θέμα Διεθνούς Δικαίου και ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων. Θεωρώ ανεπίτρεπτο να συνεχίζεται στην Κύπρο, χώρα-μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, η στρατιωτική κατοχή και μάλιστα από χώρα που επιδιώκει να ενταχθεί στην Ευρωπαϊκή οικογένεια.

Πιστεύω πως η κινητικότητα που έχει αναπτυχθεί το τελευταίο διάστημα μπορεί να ανοίξει ένα παράθυρο ευκαιρίας για λύση του προβλήματος.

Μια λύση που θα οδηγήσει στην επανένωση του νησιού, ώστε Ελληνοκύπριοι και Τουρκοκύπριοι να ζήσουν αρμονικά μέσα σε ένα ευρωπαϊκό περιβάλλον ασφάλειας, ανάπτυξης και ευημερίας στο πλαίσιο μιας δίκαιης, βιώσιμης και λειτουργικής λύσης.

Θα ήθελα να εκφράσω την ιδιαίτερη εκτίμησή μου για τη συνεχή, από το 1964 μέχρι σήμερα, συμβολή της Αυστρίας στην Ειρηνευτική Δύναμη στην Κύπρο, καθώς και για τη σταθερή υποστήριξή σας στις προσπάθειες επιλύσεως στο πλαίσιο των αποφάσεων των Ηνωμένων Εθνών.

Κύπρος- Ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος εύχεται να έχουν θετική κατάληξη οι συνομιλίες για το κυπριακό
Θερμή ευχή να καρποφορήσει η νέα πρωτοβουλία στο κυπριακό εξέφρασε ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος , μιλώντας χθες στα μέλη του Συνδέσμου Συνταξιούχων του ΡΙΚ που επισκέφθηκαν την Κωνσταντινούπολη.

Στην ομιλία του, η οποία μεταδόθηκε από το “Ράδιο Πάφος”, ο κ. Βαρθολομαίος ευχήθηκε “να έχουν ευτυχή κατάληξη οι συνομιλίες μεταξύ των ηγετών των δύο κοινοτήτων και να εξευρεθεί μια δίκαιη και βιώσιμη λύση του κυπριακού”.

Απευθύνω τα συγχαρητήριά μου στους οργανωτές, Otkritie Financial Corporation και RBC, για τις άψογες διευθετήσεις και για την προσέλκυση τόσων σημαντικών προσωπικοτήτων. Εύχομαι σε όλους εποικοδομητικές συζητήσεις κατά το συνέδριο σας καθώς και ευχάριστη διαμονή στην Κύπρο.

Η παρουσία σας εδώ αποτελεί επιβεβαίωση του ρόλου της Κύπρου ως ένας ελκυστικός προορισμός συνεδριακού τουρισμού. Επιπλέον, ως μια αντανάκλαση των ισχυρών δεσμών φιλίας και συνεργασίας μεταξύ της Ρωσικής Ομοσπονδίας και της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Είμαστε ευχαριστημένοι με το σημαντικό αριθμό διακεκριμένων ρωσικών εταιρειών που έχουν ως βάση την Κύπρο. Θα συνεχίσουμε να προσπαθούμε να κάνουμε τη διεξαγωγή των εργασιών τους από την Κύπρο όσο το δυνατό πιο άνετη.

Ο αριθμός των Ρώσων τουριστών στην Κύπρο έχει αυξηθεί κατά 30% τον περασμένο χρόνο και υπάρχουν ενδείξεις ότι η ίδια αύξηση θα επιτευχθεί και φέτος. Τα τελευταία χρόνια η Κύπρος κατατάσσεται μεταξύ των κύριων επενδυτών στη Ρωσία.

Η Κύπρος και ο λαός της είναι πράγματι ευγνώμονες προς τη Ρωσική Κυβέρνηση και το ρωσικό λαό για την από μακρού υποστήριξή τους στις προσπάθειες για εξεύρεση μιας ειρηνικής λύσης διζωνικής, δικοινοτικής ομοσπονδίας στο κυπριακό πρόβλημα, βασισμένης στα ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας, το διεθνές δίκαιο και τις ευρωπαϊκές αξίες. Μια τέτοια λύση θα επανενώσει το νησί και τους κατοίκους του και θα τους δώσει ευκαιρίες για ευημερία, ειρήνη και απόλαυση των θεμελιωδών ελευθεριών τους σε ασφαλές περιβάλλον.

Από μέρους της, η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, που είναι πλήρες μέλος της ΕΕ από τον Μάιο του 2004, υποστηρίζει θερμά την αυξανόμενη συνεργασία μεταξύ της ΕΕ και της Ρωσίας. Πιστεύουμε στον στρατηγικό χαρακτήρα αυτής της σχέσης, αφού η Ρωσία είναι πολύ σημαντική για την ευρωπαϊκή ευημερία και ασφάλεια και αντίστροφα.

Το θέμα του Συνεδρίου σας δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι πιο επίκαιρο. Η παγκόσμια οικονομική αστάθεια είναι σημαντικός λόγος ανησυχίας για τις κυβερνήσεις, τον επιχειρηματικό κόσμο και το κοινό, σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα. Κοιτάζοντας τα θέματα των συνεδριάσεων και των συζητήσεων, είμαι πεπεισμένος ότι πρόκειται για ένα σημαντικό συνέδριο, με πολύ σημαντικά αποτελέσματα που θα αναμένονται με ανυπομονησία.

Η Κύπρος προσφέρει μια στρατηγική θέση, ευνοϊκό φορολογικό περιβάλλον, μορφωμένο και πολύγλωσσο εργατικό δυναμικό, εξαίρετες τηλεπικοινωνίες, σύγχρονη τραπεζική, λογιστική και νομική υποδομή, τα οποία καθιστούν την χώρα την τέλεια επιχειρηματική γέφυρα για την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, τη Ρωσία και την Κεντρική Ασία, τη Μέση Ανατολή και τη Βόρεια Αφρική. Η χώρα μας έχει αποδεδειγμένο ιστορικό μακροοικονομικής σταθερότητας και πρόσφατα έχει καταστεί μέλος της Ευρωζώνης. Ως εκ τούτου, δεν αποτελεί έκπληξη ότι η Κύπρος έχει καθιερωθεί ως ένα προκεχωρημένο φυλάκιο στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο από το οποίο μπορεί κάποιος να αρχίσει μια επιχείρηση ή μια επένδυση, επωφελούμενος από το χαμηλό εταιρικό φόρο και τις περισσότερες από 40 Συνθήκες Αποφυγής Διπλής Φορολογίας που έχουν συναφθεί με χώρες σ’ ολόκληρη την υδρόγειο. Η Κύπρος φιλοδοξεί να καταστεί ένα από τα οικονομικά και επιχειρηματικά κέντρα της περιοχής, ένας κόμβος επικοινωνιών και μεταφορών, ένας προορισμός ιατρικής περίθαλψης και φροντίδας φυσικής κατάστασης και ένας τόπος συνάντησης για λαούς και πολιτισμούς.

Επιπρόσθετα, η ζωή στην Κύπρο για τους ξένους επενδυτές και τις οικογένειές τους είναι ευχάριστη με 360 ημέρες ηλιοφάνειας το χρόνο και ένα από τα χαμηλότερα επίπεδα εγκληματικότητας στην Ευρώπη.

Στην Κύπρο θα ανακαλύψετε ένα κόσμο γεμάτο γοητευτικές παραλίες και ευωδιαστές βουνοκορφές, αμπέλια διάσπαρτα με ελιές και αρχαία ερείπια που εξάπτουν τη φαντασία.

Ακόμα μια φορά, θα ήθελα να σας καλωσορίσω στην Κύπρο και να σας προσκαλέσω, εκτός από το να παρακολουθήσετε αυτό το σημαντικό συνέδριο, να εξερευνήσετε την πληθώρα ευκαιριών που η Κύπρος έχει να προσφέρει. Με τα λίγα αυτά λόγια κηρύττω την έναρξη του Συνεδρίου.

Κύπρος – Πανευρωπαϊκοί αγώνες σκοποβολής
Με τη συμμετοχή 400 αθλητών και αθλητριών από 40 χώρες της Γηραιάς Ηπείρου, ξεκινούν την ερχόμενη Κυριακή 6 Ιουνίου, στο Ολυμπιακό σκοπευτήριο, οι Πανευρωπαϊκοί Αγώνες Σκοποβολής 2008, που είναι και η τελευταία σκοπευτική διοργάνωση πριν από τους Ολυμπιακούς του Πεκίνου.

Οπως αναφέρει ανακοίνωση της Σκοπευτικής Ομοσπονδίας Κύπρου, η επίσημη τελετή έναρξης των αγώνων, οι οποίοι τελούν υπό την αιγίδα του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας Δημήτρη Χριστόφια, θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Κυριακή στις 7.00 μ.μ. και θα περιλαμβάνει παρέλαση αθλητών, τελετουργικό πρόγραμμα με ομιλίες και χαιρετισμούς, καθώς και καλλιτεχνικό πρόγραμμα με παραδοσιακούς χορούς.

Ηδη, οι ξένες αποστολές άρχισαν από αυτή τη βδομάδα να καταφθάνουν στο νησί μας και οι αθλητές να έχουν μια πρώτη επαφή με τις εγκαταστάσεις του Ολυμπιακού σκοπευτηρίου. Μεταξύ των αποστολών που ήδη βρίσκονται στην Κύπρο είναι οι εθνικές ομάδες της Ελλάδας της Ιταλίας, και της Φιλανδίας, ενώ μέχρι την Κυριακή αναμένεται να φθάσουν όλες οι χώρες, για να δώσουν το παρών τους στην τελετή έναρξης.

“Gagauz Opened a representation office in the TRNC”
Under the above title Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (27.06.08) reports in its first page that Mikhail Markovich Formuzal, the President of the autonomous Gagauz Republic, stated that Gahauz opened a representation office in the “TRNC”, which will offer services in the fields of culture, education and economy. Mr Formuzal stated that the representation office is inside the Near East University (YDU) and added that he wants the establishment of relations in economy and culture with the “TRNC”, in addition to the relations in education which already exist.

Mr Formuzal also stated that he will have a meeting today with the self-styled prime minister, Ferdi Soyer, to whom he will announce the decision of the Gagauz assembly about the opening of a consulate in occupied Cyprus.
He also stated that Nikolai Vornikov, who is a graduate from YDU, will be appointed as consul of the autonomous Gagauz Republic.

The paper also writes Mr Formuzal and the founder of the illegal Near East University, Rector Dr Suat Gunsel, signed a protocol of cooperation in the field of education.

In addition, Mr Formuzal held a meeting with the speaker of the self-styled assembly, Fatma Ekenoglu. The paper writes that cooperation between the “assembly” in occupied Cyprus and the assembly of Gagauz was discussed during the meeting. Mr Formuzal stated that he wanted a parliamentary delegation from the Gagauz Autonomous Republic “to visit the TRNC to strengthen bilateral relations”.

Mr Formuzal also held a meeting with the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce where he discussed business potentials between Gagauz and occupied Cyprus.

Talat: Instability in Turkey could hurt Turkish Cypriots
Under the above title, Turkish daily Today´s Zaman newspaper (27.06.08) reports the following:

“Political instability in Turkey has the potential to hurt the Turkish Cypriots as they are preparing for direct negotiations with the Greek Cypriots for reunification of the divided island, Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat said yesterday.

“Any instability that could arise in Turkey will certainly affect us, there is no doubt about it,” Talat told reporters in Istanbul after a meeting with Suleyman Celebi, chairman of the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers’ Unions (DİSK), one of the biggest labor unions in Turkey.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is facing a closure case at the Constitutional Court on charges of becoming a focal point for anti-secular activities. Senior officials of the party, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, a former AK Party member, also face a political ban in connection with the closure case. Many fear a ban on the governing party and the prime minister would destabilize politics at home and deal a serious blow to Turkey’s relations with the European Union.

Talat said Ankara’s support for the Turkish Cypriot side in the reunification process was crucial and that any destabilizing development in Turkey would have dire impacts on the Turkish Cypriots as they negotiate a just settlement with the Greek Cypriots.

“Turkey is the only country that unconditionally supports us in the world. Any weakness that could emerge in this country will have the danger of leaving us alone in the middle of the road,” he said. “We appreciate Turkey’s importance more and more when we see other countries that we hope will support us. Look at Britain; they signed a memorandum with the Greek Cypriots and are attempting to change parameters of a settlement,” Talat stated.

The British government and the Greek Cypriot administration signed a cooperation deal in early June, a move criticized by Turkey and the Turkish Cyprus as an intervention in the ongoing peace process.

“Therefore, we are concerned about political instability in Turkey,” Talat said. “We want the problems to be resolved as soon as possible. Turkey will solve this within its own mechanisms.”

Talat met with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias in March, soon after Christofias’ election victory against hard-liner Tassos Papadopoulos, and the landmark meeting ended with an agreement to start preparatory talks to pave the way for direct reunification talks in the following months. The direct talks had been expected to take place in late June, but disagreements as to the timing emerged in later stages of the preparatory talks.

Talat and Christofias are now expected to meet on July 1 to review progress in preparatory talks and hopefully set a date for direct talks. “We have good intentions. We really want to reach a solution,” Talat said. “We have no bad intentions, no secret agenda. We are working with sincerity, but we also know it is important to safeguard the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriots.””
On the same issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (27.06.08) also writes that the Turkish Cypriot leader visited the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO). During the meeting, which lasted 20 minutes, Mr Talat referred to the latest developments of the Cyprus problems and stated that the Turkish Cypriot “people” need the continuation of ISO’s support.

Moreover, illegal Bayrak television (26.06.08) broadcast that the Turkish Cypriot leader will return to the occupied part of Cyprus on the night of 27th of June.

The 80% of the hotels in occupied Cyprus are on the verge of bankruptcy
Turkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris newspaper (27.06.08) reports Star Kibris reports that the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Hotel Owners’ Union, Turhan Beydagli stated that 80% of the hotels in occupied Cyprus are on the verge of bankruptcy, while 30% of the hotels are facing the danger of distraint. Mr Beydagli stated that because of the problems faced in the tourism industry in occupied Cyprus the hotel sector is suffering as well.

He also stated that while the “isolation” is continuing the problems in tourism will continue as well and added that the number of the tourists who visit occupied Cyprus has been decreased since the year 2005.

Mr Beydagli made these statements during a visit he paid to the Social Democrat Party (TDP). The delegation also held a meeting with the United Cyprus Party (BKP) and it will continue to have meetings with political parties hoping to find a solution for the problems faced by the Union.

Under the above title Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (27.06.08) reports in its first page that the excavations at the Ancient Salamis city, which have started in the year 1998 by the Eastern Mediterranean University (DAU), the Ankara University and the Department of Antiquities and Museums, under of Professor Dr Coskun Ozgunel, brought to light this season a male statue dated to the Roman period and two frieze blocks which depict animals.

The paper, which notes that this is the 11th year of excavations in Salamis, also writes that the excavations have started on the 3rd of June and will continue until the 31st of July.

Turkish Spokesman Views Union for Mediterranean Project
Ankara Anatolia news agency (26.06.08) reports the following:
“Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that a decision would be made soon about Turkey’s position on the Union for Mediterranean Project and the Mediterranean Summit.

Burak Ozugergin, spokesman for the MFA, said at the weekly press briefing on Thursday, “since all aspects of the project have not been clarified yet, our assessment process has not finished. We will make a decision soon about Turkey’s position on the Mediterranean Union Project and the Mediterranean Summit to be held on July 13th.”

“The original version of the project included some disturbing elements since it was introduced as an alternative to the EU membership. Later on, representatives of French, Italian and Spanish governments said in a declaration in Rome that the project did not concern ongoing entry negotiations,” he said.

“We were told that the Mediterranean Union would not be a political body and that the union would not deal with political issues. We are waiting for further information about the mechanism before making a decision,” Ozugergin added.

The Union for the Mediterranean is a proposed community of EU- member states and countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea planned to be established in July 2008. It was originally suggested by French President Nicolas Sarkozy as part of his election campaign. Sarkozy, last year, invited all Mediterranean leaders to a summit in France to take place on June 13th, 2008.”

Babacan leaves for African Union meeting in Egypt
Ankara Anatolia news agency (26.06.08) reports the following:
“Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan left for Egypt late on Thursday to attend the 13th regular meeting of ministers council which will be held during African Union Summit in Sharm El Sheikh city.

Babacan will be in Egypt between June 27th and 28th.

Babacan will address foreign ministers of the Union in a special session. He will also hold bilateral meetings.

On its 10th summit meeting, which took place in Addis Ababa in January 2008, African Union accepted Turkey as a strategic partner.

Also Turkey-Africa Cooperation Summit will take place in Istanbul in August.”

Talat informed the Turkish Cypriot political Parties which are represented in the “assembly” about the latest developments of the Cyprus problems
Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (01.07.08) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, informed yesterday the five Turkish Cypriot political Parties which are represented in the “assembly” about the latest developments of the Cyprus problems. The meeting between the five parties, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), the National Unity Party (UBP), the Democratic Party (DP), the Freedom and Reform Party (ORP), the Social Democrat Party (TDP) and Mr Talat started at 12 yesterday. No statements were made after the meeting.

The Turkish Cypriot press (01.07.08) reports also on today’s meeting between the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat and President Demetris Christofias.

Under the title “Will the negotiations start?” Halkin Sesi reports in its first page that the comprehensive negotiations which were to start on the 21st of June have not started yet and notes that today’s meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat will be crucial as regards the launching or not of the negotiations.

Under the title “critical day” Yeni Duzen reports that the future of the Cyprus problem and the work done until now will be put on the table at today’s meeting between the two leaders.

Avci calls for a solution of the Cyprus problem based on two founding states
Illegal Bayrak television (30.06.08) broadcast the following:
“Deputy Prime Minister Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has called for an immediate start of the full-fledged negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

Speaking during a reception today, Mr Avci said that the Turkish Cypriot Side is ready for a solution which will be based on bi-zonality and political equality of the two founding states which will include Turkey’s guarantorship on the island.

He also called on the Greek Cypriot Side to put forward its intention as soon as possible.

Noting that Turkish Cypriot people’s will for a solution which was put forward in the 2004 referendum is still continuing, Mr Avci said that this does not mean that Turkish Cypriots are ready to sign whatever would be in the agreement.
Stating that the negotiations process will continue, Turgay Avci stressed that Turkish Cypriot people’s rights will not be abandoned.

He also added that efforts to strengthen the Turkish Cypriot people and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will continue while the negotiations process goes on.”

Reports on the status of the Turkish Cypriot CTP in the Socialist International congress
Illegal Bayrak television (30.06.08) broadcast the following:
“The Republican Turkish Party – United Forces (CTP-BG) has been accepted as a full member of the Socialist International.

The CTP-BG’s membership was approved at the 23rd congress of the Socialist International which opened in Greece with over 650 delegates of global social democratic, socialist and labor parties.

The CTP-BG’s full membership to the association was backed by all delegates attending the Congress except those from the Greek Cypriot EDEK party.
In an opening address at the Congress, Greece’s main opposition leader George Papandreou who chairs the Socialist International, congratulated the two leaders in Cyprus for launching a new process and wished them success at their meeting tomorrow.

He also voiced the Socialist International’s support to the efforts aimed at reuniting the island.

The Republican Turkish Party – United Forces’ Foreign Relations Secretary Unal Findik and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee Kutlay Erk are in Athens for the three day Congress which is being held under the theme of ‘Global Solidarity’.

During their stay in the coastal Athens resort of Lagonissi, Findik and Erk will also have bilateral discussions.

The Congress will discuss climate change, peace and conflict resolution, the world economy and migration issues.”

On the issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (01.07.08) reports that the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) which is attending the 23rd Congress of the Socialist International in Athens Greece was elected as consultative member. According to the paper all the parties which are participating in the Congress, except EDEK, voted in favor of CTP.
Contributions from Turkey to the universities in the occupied areas of Cyprus
On its front-page, Turkish Cypriot Afrika newspaper (01.07.08) reports on statements by the illegal Turkish Ambassador to occupied Lefkosia, Mr Turkekul Kurttekin, at an opening ceremony of the Plaza and Future Technology Centre at the Lefka European University (LAU). Mr Kurttekin referring to the latest problems faced at the universities said: “The most important right for a student is the right of education. In my opinion, the other rights come after this.” According to Mr Kurttekin, the existence of continuous dialogue is a must to overcome the problems at the universities. Mr Kurttekin added: “By creating this environment, the reflection of the foreign factors to the university will be reduced to the minimum.” Mr Kurttekin referred to Turkey’s contribution to the investments in the infrastructure and said: “This contribution is made with money collected with the sweat of the people living in Turkey and sent here.”

He said that together with “TRNC officials” and university officials they succeeded to reach the aim of these contributions with the most active, rational and economic way. Mr Kurttekin concluded that as Turkey’s “Ambassador” his interest in the issue is multidimensional and that the contributions to the “TRNC” universities will continue.

The ceremony was also attended by the self-styled speaker of the parliament Mrs Fatma Ekenoglu and the district governor of Morfou, Mr Cemal Turkler.

The 2.9 % of the workforce of occupied Cyprus is employed in the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.
Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (01.07.08) reports that according to the results of the October 2007 Workforce Household Survey carried out by the “State Planning Organization”, the number of the people who were employed in October 2007 decreased by 2.028 persons in comparison with October 2006 and fell to 89.787. The paper notes that 31.5 % of the people who are working are employed in the “public” sector. Furthermore, 2.9 % of the workforce is employed in the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.
According to the paper, 3.5 % of the workforce was employed in the sector of agriculture in October 2007 (decreased by 1.3 % compared to October 2006), 9.9 % in the industry (increased by 0.4 %), 10.8 % in the constructions (increased by 0.4 % compared to October 2006) and 75.8% (increased by 0.6% compared to October 2006) in the services sector.

The survey showed that unemployment in the occupied areas of Cyprus was 9.4% in October 2007 and that the total number of the unemployed persons was 9.361. According to the survey 47 % of the unemployed persons were men and 53 % women. Unemployment among the men was 6.7 % and among the women 14.7 %. The highest rate of unemployment was observed in occupied Trikomo area (13.3 %) and the lowest in occupied Nicosia (7.7 %). The unemployment rate in the young people between the ages of 15 and 24 is 22.8 % in the whole occupied area of Cyprus. Trikomo is again the area with the highest rate (28.8 %) while occupied Nicosia has the lowest rate (17.7 %).

Turkey expects start of negotiations on 3 chapters during France’s EU Presidency
Ankara Anatolia news agency (30.06.08) reported the following from Paris:
“Turkey expects three new chapters to be opened to negotiation with the European Union (EU), as France takes over the rotating presidency of the union as of July 1st.

Negotiations are expected to start on chapters of “free movement of capital”, “energy” and “education and culture”, officials said on Monday.

A chapter on “social policy and employment” may also be opened to negotiation later on, same sources added.

High-level French officials have recently stated that France would not hinder Turkey’s full membership negotiations, although the country is known for its opposition against Turkey’s full membership.

France previously vetoed the opening of five chapters including “economic and monetary policy”, claiming that such chapters evoked direct membership to EU.

On the other hand, French Senate recently rejected a constitutional amendment envisaging a direct referendum in France to vote on Turkey’s EU membership. The amendment, which was previously adopted at the French parliament, stated that “the requirement of referendum should continue for the full membership of countries whose population exceeds 5 percent of the EU’s total population”.

The discussion on the constitutional amendment package will be concluded at a session next week which will bring together the members of the French parliament and the senate. In order for the amendment to be adopted, three-fifths of the members should vote in favor of it.”

Babacan asks Luxembourg to support Turkey’s EU bid and calls for strengthening of economic relations
Ankara Anatolia news agency (30.06.08) reports from Ankara:
“Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan met on Monday with Luxembourg’s Deputy PM and Foreign Affairs and Migration Minister Jean Asselborn and said that Turkey expects this founding member of European Union to continue to support its EU bid.

“Luxembourg is one of the most prosperous countries in Europe. Economic relations between Turkey and Luxembourg, which is one of the world’s leading banking and finance hub, are important,” Babacan told a joint press conference after their meeting in Ankara.

“We will do our best to improve and deepen relations with Luxembourg in the future,” Babacan said.

Asselborn said Luxembourg’s economy minister would visit Turkey later this year to boost economic relations between the two countries.
He touched on Turkey’s EU bid and said that European politicians should support Turkey on its way to the Union. However, he said Turkish government should continue reforms.

Asselborn also said that European politicians should help resolve Cyprus problem and that 2008 could be an opportunity to settle the question, stating that EU and Turkey should both solve their domestic problems.”
Greens Party to be formed in Turkey
Turkish daily Milliyet newspaper (30.06.08) reports that a petition for the formation of the Greens Party which has been signed by 120 intellectuals, academics and artists will be submitted to the Turkish Ministry of Interior today.

How the Turkish Cypriot and the Turkish press covered yesterday’s meeting between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader
All the Turkish Cypriot press reports today (02.07.08) about yesterday’s meeting between President Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat as follows:

Under the title “Bargain for citizenship and sovereignty” Kibris reports in its first page that the meeting, which lasted for about four hours and a half, was the third meeting between the two leaders and notes that Christofias and Talat will meet again on the 25th of July.

Yeni Duzen reports on the issue under the title “One sovereignty, one citizenship” and publishes the text of the joint statement issued after the meeting of the two leaders.

Under the title “The last meeting on the 25th of July”, Star Kibris writes that the leaders met for four hours and a half and issued a joint statement of four and a half lines.

Volkan reports on the same issue under the title “We reject this humiliation” and writes that Talat succumbed to Christofias and accepted the one sovereignty and one citizenship under the roof of the Republic of Cyprus. Volkan also writes that Talat trampled upon his oath and the “constitution”. “Therefore he does not represent the Turkish Cypriots. The things he has accepted do not bind the Turkish Cypriots. We reject this humiliation”, writes the paper.

Under the title “The crisis was prevented”, Kibrisli reports in its first page that the only success after the four and half hours meeting between the two leaders was the prevention of a crisis. The paper also writes that President Christofias continued to be reluctant as regards the launching of comprehensive negotiations and tried to gain time. The paper also writes that the meeting came very close to a breaking point and it was due to Talat’s efforts that the crisis was overcome.
Under the title “Again on the 25th of July”, Vatan writes that the issues of citizenship and sovereignty were the only issues discussed at the four hours and a half meeting held between Christofias and Talat who are meeting again on the 25th of July.

Under the title “Once again no date for negotiations!”, Halkin Sesi writes that the date for the launching of comprehensive negotiations was not determined during yesterday’s meeting and adds that Mr Talat will inform today at 16.30 the Turkish Cypriot political parties about the meeting.

Afrika reports on the same issue under the title “One citizenship, one sovereignty” and writes that these were the main issues discussed over the Christofias -Talat meeting.

In addition Turkish daily Milliyet (02.07.08) publishes a report on the issue by the paper’s correspondent in the occupied part of Cyprus Sefa Karahasan under the title “Again no negotiation date” according to which Christofias and Talat met yesterday for the third time. “Prior to the meeting which did not result to anything, Christofias said to the Austrian paper Kurier that ‘with Talat, they fight against the Turkish occupation and the dependence to the motherland’, writes Milliyet. Mr Karahasan also observes that the leaders, who started the negotiations with shaking hands in the previous meetings, yesterday for the first time they did not pose together to the press. It is also observed that after the meeting there was a distance between the two leaders, concludes Milliyet’s report.

Turkish daily Radikal (02.07.08) under the title “The Cypriot leaders have reached to agreement for ‘a single sovereignty and citizenship’”, reports on yesterday’s meeting between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. The paper also reports that it is confirmed that the former Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, will be appointed as the United Nations Special Representative for Cyprus.

Reactions of the Turkish Cypriot parties to the meeting between the two leaders
The Turkish Cypriot press reports today (02.07.08) various reactions to the meeting yesterday between President Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat as follows:
Kibris reports that the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) stated that it is not satisfied with the fact that comprehensive negotiations are not starting following yesterday’s meeting between President Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat. The party also stated that the fact that the two leaders are meeting on the 25th of July is very positive and asked for the determination of a date for launching negotiations at that meeting.

Volkan reports that Mr Serdar Denktas, the chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), reacted sharply to the agreement between President Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, for one citizenship and one sovereignty and stated that they will fight against this agreement.

Mr Denktas stated that they will never adopt the approach of one sovereignty whatever its principle and its content may be and that they will oppose to this until the end. He added that the Turkish Cypriot “people” are far from accepting this approach and that Mr Talat must act as a “president” approaching issues according to the will of the people and not with the views of CTP. Mr Denktas emphasized that they will fight against this agreement until the end.

Penning on yesterday’s meeting between the two leaders in Kibris, columnist Hasan Hasturer writes, inter alia, that during the meeting Talat insisted that a date for the launching of comprehensive negotiations be determined in order to be announced to the public. As he notes, if Talat insisted even harder on the issue, the negotiations would have been ended.

Volkan reports on the reaction of Mr Ahmet Yonluer, chairman of the Politics for the People Party (HIS), to statements by President Demetris Christofias to the Austrian newspaper “Kourier”. According to Volkan, Mr Christofias stated to the Austrian newspaper that he and Mr Talat are fighting against the occupation and the dependence to the motherland.

Mr Yonluer reacted sharply to these statements stating that Mr Talat did not react but he is obliged to make a statement on the issue. Mr Yonluer wonders whether or not Mr Christofias and Mr Talat had a secret agreement and if this is the case why the Turkish Cypriot people are not aware. Mr Yonluer stated that Mr Talat has to answer these questions to the people. “This is a great accusation,” Mr Yonluer added.

The illegal regime to establish a “representation office” in Israel
Illegal Bayrak television (01.07.08) broadcast the following:
“Deputy Prime Minister-Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has announced that work towards opening a representation office in Israel will soon be completed.

Mr Avci was speaking during a visit paid to him by a delegation from the Turkic World Youth Organization.

Welcoming the delegation, Mr Avci pointed the importance of the support being provided by the Alliance to the efforts aimed at explaining Turkish Cypriot people’s rightful cause to the Turkic World and other countries.
He complained that the Greek Cypriot Side was doing everything it could to maintain the international isolation on the Turkish Cypriot People at a time when the negotiations process was continuing but said that the TRNC will continue its initiatives towards lifting the isolation.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister also briefed the members of the Turkic World Youth Organization on the latest developments concerning the Cyprus issue.”

Kosovo-Turkey Chamber of Commerce formed
Ankara Anatolia news agency (02.07.08) reports that the “Kosovo-Turkey Chamber of Commerce” has been established to further improve commercial relations and cooperation between the two countries.
Mustafa Sarnic, undersecretary of Turkey’s coordination bureau in Kosovo, said at a news conference on Tuesday that the chamber would act as a bridge between Kosovar and Turkish companies.

“The chamber was established with the support of Turkish businessmen. It will provide Turkish businessmen with some facilities in their investments in Kosovo,” he said.

Oguz Turkeli, director of the Turkish Airlines Office in Pristina, was elected as chairman of the Kosovo-Turkey Chamber of Commerce.

Turkey signs trade agreement with the countries of South America
Ankara Anatolia news agency (01.07.08) reported the following from Ankara:
“Turkey has opened to South American market, economy bureaucrats said on Tuesday.

Turkey signed a preferential trade agreement with Mercosur, the common market of South America, in a summit in Argentina.

Mercosur is a Regional Trade Agreement (RTA) among Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay founded in 1991 by the Treaty of Asunción, which was later amended and updated by the 1994 Treaty of Ouro Preto. Its purpose is to promote free trade and the movement of goods, people, and currency.
Turkish foreign trade bureaucrats aim to open to South American market by signing a free trade agreement with Mercosur. The preferential trade agreement signed in Argentina would constitute a frame agreement for free trade agreement negotiations, the bureaucrats also said.

Turkish exports to Mercosur states were around 171 million USD in 2006 and 304 million USD in 2007. Imports from the region by Turkey were around 1.3 billion USD in 2006 and 1.6 billion USD in 2007.

Mercosur is defined as the third biggest economic integration in the world following the European Union (EU) and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Venezuela joined the market in 2006. Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico signed free trade agreements with Mercosur and became a partner to the market.

The bloc has a market figure around 1 trillion USD and comprises a population of around 200 million.”

Reactions of the Turkish Cypriot parties and organisations to the meeting between the two leaders
The Turkish Cypriot press reports today (03.07.08) on reactions of the Turkish Cypriot political parties and various organisations about the meeting between the Cypriot leaders on the 1st of July:
Under the title “They are starting on the 1st of September”, Kibris reports in its first page that it was learned that President Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, came to an agreement to start comprehensive negotiations on the 1st of September, during their four and a half hours meeting on the 1st of July. However, they decided to announce this decision on their next meeting which will be held on the 25th of July.

According to Kibris, which invokes political sources, it is expected that the two Cypriot leaders will announce that the launching of negotiations will be on the 1st of September. The announcement will take place in the presence of the former Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, who will be appointed as the United Nations Special Representative for Cyprus and who is expected to arrive in the island by the end of July.

In addition, illegal Bayrak television broadcast the following statements by Soyer on the meeting:
“Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has said that the Talat-Christofias’ meeting was not a fruitful one.

Accusing the Greek Cypriot Side of still playing for time in spite of the change in leadership, the Premier said ‘like Mr Papadopoulos (former Greek Cypriot Leader), the current Greek Cypriot Administration will be responsible for the non-solution of the problem, if a date is not set for the start of full-fledged negotiations in September at the meeting to be held on the 25th of July’.

Pointing out that the next meeting between the two leaders is very important for the setting of a date for substantive talks, he said that ‘during the meeting, either the start of full-fledged negotiations will be announced or everybody will contribute to the tensions created by those benefiting from the non-solution’.

He also said that the enmity in the Greek Cypriot Side towards federal principles and the principle of equality of two constituent states is very meaningful and complained of negative statements issued by the Greek Cypriot side before yesterday’s meeting.

Referring to Mr Christofias’ words that ‘he worked with Mr Talat against occupation’ and that he should continue dialogue with him’, he said that the statement dynamited the negotiations process.
‘Playing with tensions by issuing such statements at a time when negotiations continue, means dynamiting the process. I condemn this attitude’, he said.”

Furthermore, Sozcu newspaper reports on the same issue under the title “Soyer: The talks were not fruitful”.

Under the title “Various reactions!”, Kibrisli reports in its first page that the Turkish Cypriot leader briefed yesterday the Turkish Cypriot political parties, which are represented in the “assembly”, about his meeting with President Demetris Christofias.

According to the paper the parties made statements after the information they received from Talat about the meeting, as follows:
The General Chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Ferdi Sabit Soyer stated: “If Christofias really wants the solution of the Cyprus problem, he must abide by his signature and the agreement he signed on the 23rd of March”. He also stated that the main aim is for negotiations to start in September.

The chairman of the National Unity Party, Tahsin Ertugruloglu (UBP), stated: “The agreement existing on the issues of ‘one sovereignty and one citizenship’ are extremely serious mistakes and dangerous”.

The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Serdar Denktas, stated: “The sovereignty belongs to the Turkish Cypriot people. The approach that the Cypriot people consist of two communities will never by accepted by the Turkish Cypriot side”.

The chairman of the Freedom and Reform Party (ORP) Turgay Avci stated: “In case there is a solution, naturally there will be one sovereignty in the international arena. However, this will be composed of two equal, sovereign states”.

The Chairman of the Social Democrat Party (TDP), Mehmet Cakici, stated: “Our priority is for the people to reach a solution. In order for this aim to become real, we are supporting the president”. Mr Cakici said that the process must be speeded up and that a date must be set for the launching of negotiations during the meeting between the two leaders on the 25th of July.

Kibris writes that Izzet Izcan, the chairman of the United Cyprus Party (BKP) stated that during the meeting between the two leaders in Cyprus the one sovereignty, one citizenship and one international identity of a federal bi-communal and bi-zonal Cyprus as they are mentioned in the decisions of the UN Security Council were confirmed and added that the negotiations must be started within this framework.

Kibris writes that self-styled speaker of the assembly, Fatma Ekenoglu, stated that what is important as regards the issues of the one sovereignty and citizenship is the implementation of these concepts. Mrs Ekenoglu also called for the launching of comprehensive negotiations the sooner possible.

Under the title “The people rebelled”, Volkan reports in its first page about various political parties and organizations that reacted against the acceptance on behalf of Talat of the “one sovereignty, one citizenship”, as follows:

The TMT organization stated: “No one has enough strength to sign any agreement which will eliminate the existence of our state. We are making our last warning: This agreement must be abandoned the sooner possible. If this does not happen, in order to claim the ownership of our state, we will resist together with our people”.

The Turkish Cypriot National Existence Council stated: “The governments are temporary. The national causes, like Cyprus, are permanent. The basis of the national cause of the Turkish Cypriots is sovereignty. This people will not be surrendered by anyone. Our rights cannot be broken”.

The Turkish Cypriot National Existence Council also stated that during the meeting between Christofias and Talat “the red lines of the Turkish Cypriot’s national cause were surpassed” and added that if the process continues this way, the whole of Cyprus will be under the sovereignty of Greece and of the Greek Cypriots and the national cause will be lost.

The Farmers Union: “The TRNC state is under threat. This moment the threat is welded by the political ideology of those who administrate the state. Those who want to make the Turkish Cypriots a patch on the Greek Cypriots they just know very well that the peasants, who are the masters of this nation, will not remain silent before the events that took place”.

The Immigrants Association: “The aim of the Greek Cypriot side is to become the owner of the whole of Cyprus and to make the Turkish Cypriots become a minority. The decision for the Cyprus issue will be made neither by Christofias nor by Talat but by the Turkish Cypriot people”.

The paper also writes that the “Enlightened Women’s Platform” noted that they will not accept any agreement that abandons the existence of the “state”.

Τurkekul Kurttekin: Turkey supports the establishment of a new partnership on the island and the two constituent states’ solution
Illegal Bayrak television (02.07.08) broadcast the following:
“Annual gratitude events organized by various veteran societies have begun. The events started this morning with wreath laying ceremonies at the Ataturk Monument and at the Tomb of Doctor Fazil Kucuk – the late leader of the Turkish Cypriot people.

As part of the events, a delegation consisting of representatives from eight veteran societies visited the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosia, Turkekul Kurttekin.

Speaking during the visit, the Ambassador said that the Turkish Cypriot people is in support of a solution to be found with the establishment of a new partnership that will protect the political equality of the Turkish Cypriot people and consist of two constituent states of equal status.

‘This is a policy which was declared by the TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and backed by Turkey’, Mr Kurttekin said.
‘The Turkish Cypriot people did not close its doors to the solution of the Cyprus problem when it declared the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’, he said.

The Ambassador added that the Turkish Cypriot people have also highlighted the maintenance of Turkey’s position as a guarantor power in Cyprus in case of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He noted that Turkey is in support of the Turkish Cypriot people’s efforts towards a solution.

Speaking on behalf of the veteran societies, the President of the Cyprus Turkish Fighters’ Association Vural Turkmen pointed out that the 34th anniversary of the 20 July Peace and Freedom Day is to be celebrated this year and expressed their gratitude to Turkey for the moral and material support it has been providing to the Turkish Cypriot People for the last 34 years.

Mr Turkmen also explained their concerns about the recent developments concerning the Cyprus issue to the Turkish Ambassador.”

Measures to tackle economic difficulties in the occupied areas
Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (03.07.08) under the title, “There is no more money from Turkey”, reports on a joint press conference of the self-styled prime minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and the self-styled finance minister Ahmet Uzun, regarding the economic difficulties being faced and the planned measures to be taken in order to protect what was achieved so far. According to the paper, Mr Soyer stated that because they did not want to ask for money from Turkey, to increase the taxation or to lift the 13th salary, they will take more efficient measures. Mr Soyer stated that in order to be able to pay the salaries at the end of the year and the 13th salary, the Turkish Cypriots have to face up to themselves and create a renaissance.
On his part, Mr Uzun explained that because of the high costs of life the subsidies could not be paid and added that if they are to be paid, the money must be secured from other savings or from other sources. Mr Uzun said that in 2008 the Turkish Republic gave to the “TRNC” 600 million YTL (about 300 million Euros) and that now they are not able to give some 80-90 million YTL more. Mr Soyer added that Turkey said: “I gave what I would give, I am not giving more.”

Statements by Babacan and Lavrov during their joint press conference
Ankara Anatolia news agency (02.07.08) reported from Ankara the following:
“The foreign minister of Turkey has indicated that their objective for Turkey-Russia relations was a multi-dimensional and intensified partnership.

Ali Babacan met the Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia, who is currently in Ankara on a state visit. Following the meeting, the two held a joint news conference.

‘Both sides have the necessary will to further improve the mutual relations. Turkey and Russia have considerable affinities in their approaches regarding international and regional issues. Our objective for Turkey-Russia relations is a multi-dimensional and intensified partnership,’ Mr Babacan said.

Upon a question about Turkey’s mediation in Syria-Israel talks, Babacan told to the reporters that ‘the third round of talks between Israel and Syria started in Istanbul yesterday and they will end tomorrow. Any tangible progress in the indirect talks, in which Turkey acts as a go-between, can lay the groundwork for direct negotiations. But talks are still at a very early stage. We believe that a progress would be made after the both parties began to display political will and resolution for a solution.’

Lavrov extended Russia’s support to Turkey-mediated talks in which the parties are negotiating over the fate of the Golan Heights.

Upon a question, Lavrov said that the U.S. plans for missile defense sites in Europe would also bring risk besides security. He said that there was no change in Russia’s approach to the U.S. plan to set up a missile base in Poland and related radar in the Czech Republic.

Lavrov thanked the Turkish government for erecting a monument in Gelibolu peninsula in northwestern Turkey out of respect to soldiers of Russian Tsar Nicolai II who fled from the Bolsheviks and took shelter in Turkey during the civil war in 1920 and 1921.

He reiterated Russia’s commitment to support the process regarding the Cyprus issue.

Babacan referred to the economic relations between the two countries and added that ‘trade volume between Turkey and Russia reached 28 billion USD in 2007 making Russia the second biggest trade partner of Turkey.’

’Turkish companies’ investments in Russia surpassed 6 billion USD while Russian companies’ direct investments in Turkey amounted to 4 billion USD. Last year, more than 2.5 million Russian people visited Turkey,’ he said.

Turkish Foreign Minister indicated that the two countries overcame the recent problem in Turkish exports of fruits and vegetables to Russia by signing a memorandum of understanding.

Babacan also recalled that 2007 was celebrated as ‘Russian Culture Year’ in Turkey while 2008 was declared as ‘Turkish Culture Year’ in Russia.

Meanwhile, Lavrov abided by the recently extended smoking ban in enclosed areas and smoked his cigarette outside the ministry building.

Following his meeting with Babacan, Lavrov was received by Turkish President Abdullah Gul.”

Turkey’s Land Forces Commander calls for unity and serenity
Ankara Anatolia news agency (02.07.08) reported the following from Ankara:
“Turkey’s Land Forces Commander Gen. Ilker Basbug said Wednesday that the ‘topic of Ergenekon investigation did not come up during my meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on June 24th.’

Gen. Basbug’s comments came after certain rumors in the Turkish media that his meeting with Erdogan on June 24th was connected to the Ergenekon investigation.

‘I want to declare openly. The comments, implications and evaluations made on my meeting with Erdogan are not real. The topic of Ergenekon investigation did not come up at all during my meeting with Erdogan,’ Gen. Basbug said.

Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Gen. Basbug said that ‘we all witnessed certain individuals being taken into custody on Tuesday as part of a probe by a prosecutor in Istanbul.’

‘I watched with sorrow certain news reports on several TV channels on Tuesday evening and read certain news articles on Wednesday morning claiming a relationship between my meeting with Erdogan on June 24th and the Ergenekon investigation,’ Gen. Basbug said.

‘I want to state clearly that such comments, implications and evaluations are not real. The topic of Ergenekon did not come up at my meeting with Erdogan on June 24th. It was impossible for the matter of Ergenekon to come up at my meeting with Erdogan. Comments, implications and evaluations made can only add up to a conspiracy theory,’ Gen. Basbug indicated.

‘It would be beneficial to ask the creators of such a conspiracy theory this question: Do not such conspiracy theories serve the interests of those trying to hurt the unity and commandership of the Turkish Armed Forces?’ Gen. Basbug said.
‘Displaying sensitivity for the unity of the Turkish Armed Forces is not only a duty of the members of the armed forces but also those of all people,’ Gen. Basbug said.

‘As Turkey, we are going through tough days. We are obliged to be more responsible and cautious,’ Gen. Basbug said.

General Basbug reminded that the media must display responsibility on relevant issues.”
